Currently with the advent of the new Government, Shri T R Baalu is the Hon’ble Union Minister for Environment & Forests Shri Babu Lal Marandi is the Hon’ble Minister of State for Environment & Forests in the Union Government. Following is a brief life-sketch of the present ministers of MOEF.

Shri T.R. Baalu : A brief profile

Shri T.R. Baalu, Union Minister for Environment & Forests, was born on 15 June, 1941 at Thalikottai in the Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu.

A science graduate from Madras University, Shri Baalu completed his engineering from the Central Polytechnic, Chennai (Tamil Nadu).

Profession-wise, Shri Baalu is a multi-dimensional professional as he has been an engineer, an industrialist and a political and social worker as well.

He has held several political posts since he started his political career four decades ago. From 1957 onwards, he has been a member of Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (DMK). During the period ranging from 1982 to 1993, he acted as the Secretary of DMK’s Madras City District Unit. He also held the positions of a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Public Accounts Committee and the Committee on Rules (Rajya Sabha) from 1986 to 1992. He was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996 and was the Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas, from 1996 to 1998.

In 1998, he was re-elected for the second term to the 12th Lok Sabha. During 1998-99, he was a Member of the Committee on Railways and also Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs.

He was elected for the third term to the 13th Lok Sabha this year and became the Hon’ble Union Minister for Environment & Forests in October 1999.

Apart from politics, the Union Minister considers cricket as his favourite pastime and recreation.

Shri Babu Lal Marandi : A brief profile

Born on January 11, 1958 in a humble tribal family at village Kodai Bank, Post Chandauri, District Giridih in Bihar, Shri Babu Lal Marandi has done graduation from Ranchi University, Ranchi (Bihar) in 1983. His father, Shri Chhotu Marandi practices agriculture.

Shri Marandi has been a very active organisational man and has held different posts in various organisations of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) to which he belongs. From 1983 to 1990 he has been the Organisational Secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bihar. In 1990, he joined the mainstream Bhartiya Janta Party as a Member and became the Organisational Secretary for Santhal Pargana (Bihar Region). Seeing his leadership qualities and keen interest in tribal development activities, he was appointed as the President of the Bihar State Adivasi Morcha in 1992. The party High Command appointed him as the Secretary of Bihar State Bhartiya Janta Party in 1994 and the President of Bhartiya Janta Party Vananchal State Committee in 1995.

He presently represents the Dumka Parliamentary Constituency of Bihar State as a Member of Parliament. As Minister of State for Environment & Forests in the Union Government, he is looking after subjects of Wildlife, Pollution Control and Tribal oriented forest development programmes among others.

Special interests of the Minister comprise service to the society and nation, love for the down trodden and liking for the rural life.
