GOVERNMENT OF INDIA

NEW DELHI-110003

BABU LAL MARANDI
(MINISTER OF STATE)

Reverence for all forms of life and non-killing of wild animals have been integral part of the culture and ethos of this country. Our Constitution also enjoins upon every citizen a duty to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wild animals. Wildlife Week is symbolic of the commitment of the Nation to strive to achieve these values.

Wildlife conservation is not an elitist fad. It is part of a planned strategy for ensuring the ecological security of the country. It aims at clean water, fertile soil and fresh air to everyone.

Non-intrinsic benefits of wildlife protected areas outweigh the material values of forests. I am sure, there would be a greater realisation of this fact in near future and the conservation of natural resources for sustainable development of the country will get the priority it deserves.

It need not be over-emphasised that public participation and contribution of local communities are of crucial importance for the success of governmental efforts for wildlife conservation.
