EDITORIAL

This is the third issue of Volume 2 and we have given in this issue two invited articles - one dealing with ground water environment and the other related to the Himalayan environment. We have also given the details of the programme that was followed in the just concluded International Workshop on Environmental Legislation and Management for SAARC Countries . Our next issue of course will contain a brief summary and recommendation of the International Workshop and in the subsequent issues some of the keynote addresses such as those of the Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Secretary, Ministry of Law and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power will be covered.

We were fortunate to have a number of visitors to our ENVIS Centre from USA. A delegation of 9 leading American academics called on us and enquired about the functioning of the Information System and research activities on Biogeochemistry. Our next issue will carry a brief write-up on this subject.

A National Seminar sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and being hosted by Indian Law Institute will be held some time in November 1996 and the theme of the Seminar is the Legislative Aspects of Environment and will be inaugurated by Honorable Chief Justice of Supreme Court Justice Ahamadi. I will be Chairing a Session dealing with Toxic Chemicals - Scientific and Legislative aspects. Further details will follow in future issues.

The SAARC delegates (Mrs. Sandhya Weerasinghe from Sri Lanka, Mr. Madhu Regmi from Nepal, Mr. M.A. Malek from Bangladesh) also visited our ENVIS Centre and had an extensive discussion for linkages and exchange of information with their respective Countries. Modality of such linkages will be taken up with concerned Authority in the Ministry of Environment and Forests for suitable action.

At present we are circulating more than 350 copies of the Newsletter including mailing addresses we have from SAARC Nations. Since the mailing list is growing very fast and at the same time we wish to operate within the budget we will be following simple format starting from this issue.
