This issue of the Newsletter contains the report of the International workshop on heavy metals in Environment held in USA sometime in August 2000. Details of some of the papers presented in that workshop will be discussed in the next newsletter. In addition, usual features such as book review, recent publications related to Biogeochemistry and also to Environmental Law are also listed. We have also included some of the ruling given by the Supreme Court on key environmental matters.

We have added in this newsletter a number of small news related to diverse aspects of environment that keep appearing in various national newspapers; details of these news can be found when you browse our web sites. A selected lists of forthcoming national and international meetings are also given. October 11 was declared a “national disaster prevention day”. It is very appropriate since India always faces one or the other type of either natural or man made disaster. A report on a workshop held on that day in the Nehru Memorial Museum will be included in the next issue of the newsletter.

It is heartening to note that the green cover of Delhi is slowly but surely increasing (The Times of India, 9th October, 2000). All of us wish the same for the whole country.

On 25th September 2000, the Ministry of Environment & Forests issued a notification: Municipal Solid Wastes (Management, and Handling) Rules, 2000. A brief mention of this notification is made in this newsletter and the full notification is in our website.

A Book Authored by the editor and titled "WATER: Quantity - Quality Perspectives in South Asia" and supported by the ENVIS activities is now available for purchase by the readers.

Wishing you a very useful reading and a very happy festival season!
