The Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences of the Department of Atomic Energy has been sponsoring the National Symposium on Environment every year since 1992. The eight symposia held so far have attracted the attention of all leading institutions of higher academic learning and organizations connected with environmental monitoring and remediation in the country and outside. The 9th symposium in the series is being held at Bangalore University Bangalore during June 5-7, 2000. Bangalore University has established separate Departments with full fledged programs in Environmental Science and Engineering. The University’s Centre for Clean Environment Technology is collaborating internationally on a number of research programs. The University also has a strong group engaged in mathematical modeling of pollution. Bangalore city also boasts of a number of Government and Private organizations interested in the study and monitoring of pollution.
Past symposia in the series have focused on special teams pertinent to the host city. Urbanization as a social phenomenon is taking place in a big way in the country with strong adverse implications on urban environment and public health. Bangalore as one of the fastest growing mentropolis in the country serves as a case study and model for other urban environmental centres. The symposium will focus on pollution in Urban Environment", an issue of serious concern as we enter the 21 st century. It is hoped that symposium would receive a cross-section of papers dealing with monitoring urban pollution, source identification, profiles of various sources, mitigation strategies etc. The symposium will also feature several invited talks by eminent enviromentalists.
Contributed papers are invited on areas of theme topic and other relevant areas such as
Contributed paper should contain abstract, introduction, method, results and conclusions. The length of the paper inclusive of figures, tables, references etc. should not exceed 6 pages, when typed single spaced (font size. 12) on A4 size sheets. Two good quality hard copies of the paper along with the floppy disks (3 1/2" diskette, MS word or WS7) should reach the following on or before March 1, 2000:

Accommodation for outstation participants can be arranged in University Hostels at nomincal charges or in guest house/hotels. Those desirous of availing this facility should clearly indicate the same in the registration form.
Industrial organisations and! commercial firms are encouraged to put up relevant exhibits pertaining to pollution control and monitoring during this period at the symposium venue. Convenor, Local Organising Committee may be contacted for further details.
